Education in New York State: The New HOPE Pilot Case Study in Teacher Training

Mary-Rose Valladares, M.R.S. Enterprises

Over the past two years, the powerful and committed New York team of New York Energy Research Development Authority (NYSERDA), New York Power Authority (NYPA) and the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) has supported delivery of the New HOPE (Hydrogen Outreach Program for Education) to over 200 high school science and technology teachers.   The teacher training was developed and delivered by led by M.R.S. Enterprises, LLC and its HOPE team.  The HOPE team includes experienced professionals in hydrogen science, engineering, business and education.

Workshop topics spanned the full range of learning in hydrogen production, storage, distribution and utilization, as well as fuel cells. This teacher training occured in full day workshops that featured hands-on activities, including construction of a fuel cell vehicle from readily available materials. Participating teachers received the New HOPE Pilot, a user friendly curriculum with lesson plans tailored to busy classroom schedules. They also received two kits: a fuel cell kit equipped with a car chassis; and a materials kit with which to continue the design and engineering process in the classroom.

Hydrogen education is a much discussed globally topic around the world.  Consistent with this trend, New York State has carefully considered the global need for hydrogen energy education.  Ever a leader, this state has gone beyond dialogue and acted locally by funding and bringing New HOPE to its high school teachers.  This experience has produced many valuable lessons learned in developing and delivery hydrogen education.   For practical and conceptual purposes, can the New York State New HOPE experience help you with your hydrogen education efforts?   Please join us for a case study that may provide constructive assistance to near and long term hydrogen education efforts in your neighborhood.
