Optimization of hydrogen generation

Jasbir K. Anand, Hydrogen Power Inc.

The present abstract describes a method for production of hydrogen, particularly water split reaction for generating hydrogen at ambient and elevated pressures obviating the need for pressurization or cryogenic liquification of the hydrogen for storage and use. This disruptive technology developed at Hydrogen Power Incorporated (HPI) labs, will revolutionize the storage, handling, transportation and distribution of hydrogen gas. This simple and competent method delivers hydrogen on–site, with minimum balance of plan. Research is under progress to improve the energy density of our starting fuel mix: the AlumiFuelTM. We have successfully improved the yield of reaction and overall energy density of AlumiFuelTM has been almost doubled. The process modifications and thriving results assure us that HPI is leading the road to market. Reaction can be controlled easily to deliver the customized hydrogen flow rates. We have solved the problems for producing hydrogen at elevated pressures by reacting metallic aluminum with water at ambient conditions under near neutral pH. This novel hydrogen generation method is comprised of a few steps: production of aluminum-containing reactant AlumiFuelTM; reaction of AlumiFuelTM with water to produce pure hydrogen gas and dispensing the hydrogen to a user device at the desired pressure/s. AlumiFuelTM is packaged in the cartridge and hydrogen is generated using proprietary drop-in recyclable cartridges with a long shelf life. Reaction is exothermic and an incredibly high amount of specific energy is released along with hydrogen generation. Our hydrogen generation method is safe, clean and "green", with non-toxic materials and commercially usable by-products. Raw materials used in our process are: readily available, relatively inexpensive, nontoxic and safe to handle.
HPI’s addressable markets include portable and stationary power applications for customers demanding safe, pure, cost-effective hydrogen on-site and on demand, without any external power requirement. Our unique technology meets the power requirements of several high priority applications, including unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), torpedoes, and man-portable back-up power supply. We are pursuing the development of a certain exciting products for national security, homeland security and selected commercial markets. We believe our technology has important advantages relative to existing methods of hydrogen production, because it can generate hydrogen without electricity.
