An Ecological and Environmental Perspective on Hydrogen: Present and Future

David Cocke, Lamar University

Hydrogen has been historically viewed as an environmentally-friendly element for industry. Technological advancements in the areas of hydrogen production, storage, distribution and utilization offer the prospect for an even greater ecological and environmentally positive position for hydrogen.

The U.S. Department of Energy seeks to identify and assess potential long-term ecological and environmental consequences of large-scale production and utilization of hydrogen from a wide range of feedstocks. Correspondingly, existing and transitional technologies utilized to produce hydrogen are evolving to more fully encompass renewable sources and advance us towards a hydrogen economy.

The existing and emerging technologies to support these views will be reviewed and put into perspective with industry and university R&D opportunities.
