Integrated Waste Hydrogen Utilization Project

Colin Armstrong, Sacre-Davey Innovations

OVERVIEW The BC Hydrogen Highway'sTM Integrated Waste Hydrogen Utilization Project (IWHUP) is a multi-faceted, synergistic collaboration that will capture hydrogen from a vented waste stream in North Vancouver and promote hydrogen fuel use through the development and demonstration of infrastructure and end use applications. The project is a 3-year, eighteen million dollar ($18,300,000 Cdn) initiative involving the following industry innovators and leaders:

Sacré-Davey Innovations (SDI) Westport Innovations, Sacré-Davey Engineering (SDE), Powertech Labs, HTEC Hydrogen Technology & Energy Corporation, Clean Energy Fuels, Dynetek Industries, Nuvera Fuel Cells, QuestAir Technologies, Easywash, Newalta, TransLink

Sacré-Davey Innovations, based in North Vancouver, is the leader and project manager of IWHUP. The goal of IWHUP is to demonstrate how harnessing industrial by-product streams rich in hydrogen can play a key role in three areas: reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, stimulating the proliferation of Hydrogen Energy Systems in Canada and around the world, and developing local expertise and jobs. These areas of focus will help maintain Canada's lead in hydrogen energy technologies and hydrogen industry infrastructure.

The initiatives of IWHUP integrate a real-world supply of hydrogen, high pressure hydrogen gas distribution infrastructure and hydrogen fuel utilization in the following suite of Sub-Projects with demonstration phases to begin in the last half of 2006 and run through until early 2008:

1: Waste Hydrogen Supply, 2: Compressed Hydrogen Distribution, 3: Light-Duty Fuelling Station, 4: Heavy-Duty Fuelling Station, 5: Light-Duty Hydrogen Vehicles, 6: Heavy-Duty HCNG Transit Buses, and 7: Combined Heat & Power Stationary Fuel Cell.

IWHUP also includes an education & outreach initiative and a comprehensive project management program designed to allow and encourage additional Sub-Projects in the future.

To realize the opportunity presented through current by-product streams of hydrogen, an integrated approach such as IWHUP is required. In addition to the investment by the industry partners above, IWHUP is being jointly funded by the following government programs:

Hydrogen Early Adopters (h2EA) Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) Canadian Transportation Fuel Cell Alliance (CTFCA) US-DoD Climate Change Fuel Cell Program
