New York Power Authority Hydropower to Hydrogen Project

Guy Sliker, Shalom Zelingher, and Yan Kishinevsky. New York Power Authority

PROJECT SUMMARY The New York Power Authority is partnering with the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority and the New York State Parks Department to develop a project to install two hydrogen generation and fueling stations in Western NY. Each fueling station will produce up to 120kg of hydrogen per day, for a total capacity of 240kg per day. The fueling stations will utilize clean, renewable hydropower to generate hydrogen through the electrolysis process. The hydrogen will be used to fuel fleets of internal combustion and fuel cell vehicles ranging in size from passenger vehicles to full size transit buses. PROJECT OBJECTIVES This project is aligned with the New York State Hydrogen Roadmap, a document that sets goals for the expanded utilization of hydrogen fuel statewide. The hydropower to hydrogen project has the potential to jumpstart a new high tech hydrogen industry, reduce the state's dependence on fossil fuels, and improve local air quality. Western NY is particularly suited to the development of an innovative hydrogen industry, given its availability of skilled workers and State Universities, and its proximity to inexpensive hydropower resources. This project, as envisioned, will be one of the largest hydrogen demonstration projects in the world.

PROJECT SCHEDULE The project started in October, 2006 and is expecting to be complete within three years. Hydrogen generation and fueling is expected to commence in late 2007.
