Safety Features of High Pressure Fuel Storage Systems

Craig Webster, Powertech Labs Inc.

The vast majority of hydrogen vehicles in service currently use high pressure fuel storage systems. High pressure fuel systems have been in large-scale use on-board compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles since the early 1960's. As a result there is considerable experience available concerning the integrity of high pressure tanks under vehicle operating conditions, and the ability of the public to handle high pressure fuel.

The presentation will review the performance of CNG fuel systems, as well as the results of tests performed on hydrogen fuel systems. In addition, the effect of moving to even higher pressures (10,000 psi) for hydrogen storage will be examined.
