Public Private Partnership to Study the Feasibility of Hydrogen Production at Existing Nuclear Power Plants

Michael Anderson, U.S. DOE Idaho Operations Office

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Idaho Operations Office (ID) has awarded $1.4 million in federal funding for two cost-shared feasibility studies of nuclear energy based production of hydrogen. Projects from GE Global Research and Electric Transportation Applications were selected to receive DOE funding. These projects are innovative, public/private endeavors that will demonstrate the capability of available hydrogen production technologies that utilize nuclear energy, and will disseminate the produced information to the developing hydrogen industry and to the public. The economic projections from these feasibility studies and the presence of industry interest will provide input to support the Department's subsequent decision to solicit and award commercial-scale nuclear hydrogen production demonstration projects satisfying Section 634 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This poster outlines the approach, objectives, schedule, and plans of the projects that were selected in August 2006 by DOE.
